Check out some highlights from George Moses Horton Day, celebrated at George Moses Horton Middle School, in celebration of Black History Month!

Students, staff, alumni, and community members came together to honor the life and legacy of George Moses Horton, an enslaved NC poet whose powerful words made him one of the first African American poets published in the United States.

From the African American Read-In, featuring special guests like NC State Representative Robert Reives, to an inspiring evening program filled with poetry, dance, and a moving performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the North Carolina Central University Mass Choir, the day was a true celebration of culture and community pride.

Congratulations to Creah O’Hara, this month's recipient of the Excellence & Opportunity Award!

Ms. O'Hara is a second-year teacher, is leading with excellence in her first year teaching 7th grade content. She designed Advisory lessons for her entire team, integrating AVID strategies and meaningful cultural connections — like exploring the history of step dancing during Black History Month and welcoming an A&T alumnus to work with students. In her classroom, she pushes students beyond memorization, challenging them to analyze, connect ideas, and explain their thinking with confidence. Ms. O’Hara is deeply reflective, consistently seeking feedback to ensure her instruction is rigorous, thoughtful, and responsive. Her commitment to growth and relational capacity is making a lasting impact. 💙

Congratulations to Michael Witkowski, Silk Hope School, named our February Champions of Character winner for the word Empathy.

Michael's nominator said:
"I would like to nominate Michael in recognition of the genuine care and compassion he shows to those around him each day. He consistently demonstrates kindness and goes out of his way to ensure his classmates feel included, valued, and accepted. When a peer is having a tough day, he notices, often without a word being said, and steps in to offer encouragement, humor, or simple companionship to lift their spirits.

He has a remarkable ability to read body language, facial expressions, and the overall “vibe” of a situation. Because of this awareness, he responds thoughtfully and sensitively, helping others navigate their feelings in a calm and caring way. His empathy creates a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and understood. He truly embodies what it means to care for others, and our school community is better because of him."

By embracing the strategy of data-driven practices, intentional instructional changes, and our principals embedding themselves as coaches instead of evaluators, Education NC recently came to observe the intentional practices implemented at Virginia Cross Elementary School and Siler City Elementary School. We are proud of the academic growth reflected from the hard work on display at SCE, VCE, and across the county.
