This year, Chatham Central educator Amy King collaborated with National Geographic Explorer Haruka Sakaguchi and former Japanese internment camp incarceree Mary Abo to help develop a powerful, student-centered curriculum inspired by The Camps America Built. This work brings the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II into the classroom with empathy, inquiry, and meaningful engagement. National Geographic recently published the Explorer-Educator Exchange lesson between Chatham Central and Ms. Sakaguchi found here:
https://storymaps.arcgis.com/collections/851de1d34d794a4a8fdbd7f33bd0e060?item=8

The website features a timeline of impactful learning, featuring the presentation our students and Ms. King delivered at the CCS Board of Education meeting. National Geographic also highlights the short documentary made by our Chatham County Schools PR team on the effect this project had on our students and their perspectives moving forward. To view the video, click the link here: https://youtu.be/N7jqpkVPIH4

We’re honored to see this work featured and proud of the impact it’s making for our students and beyond. #OneChatham #ElevateChatham #BearDown

Congratulations to our April Excellence and Opportunity Champion, Ms. Emily Richardson, Curriculum Coach at Chatham Grove! Her nominator said:

"Emily Richardson exemplifies the qualities of an Excellence and Opportunity Champion through her unwavering commitment to a school culture grounded in the belief that all students can succeed. She consistently supports teachers in delivering rigorous, inclusive instruction that meets the diverse needs of every learner, while also challenging them to reflect on and shift their practices to better serve students—especially those who are most marginalized. Emily actively advocates for equitable access to high-quality learning experiences, encouraging teachers to maintain high expectations for all students and to remove barriers to achievement. Through her daily actions and leadership, she has had a profound schoolwide impact, transforming mindsets and strengthening instructional practices to ensure that every student is seen, supported, and held to high standards."

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

We celebrated our amazing team at today’s luncheon at Central Services, and honestly, one day isn’t enough.

They keep the calendars straight, the phones answered, and the rest of us on track (most of the time 😉). We’d be lost without you!
