Northwood High's Cox digs in for earth science

RALEIGH, N.C. — No earth science educator in the state Phil Cox or even the Southeast United States is doing it better than Northwood High School’s Phil Cox.

Cox is the 2018 Southeastern Outstanding Earth Science Teacher (OEST).  He won the North Carolina OEST competition. That put him in the running for regional honors, and he emerged as the best of the best in the Southeast.

The annual teacher awards are coordinated by the N.C. Geological Survey and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, an organization focused on raising the quality of geoscience education and increasing emphasis on teaching the subject at all levels.

Cox used to teach at Jordan-Matthews High School.
