Reindeer Readers unwraps gift of literacy at Silk Hope School

SILER CITY — Toys tend to take up a good bit of play space this time of year. ChathamSilk Hope School students work through a book donated through the Reindeer Readers program. Superintendent Dr. Derrick D. Jordan speaks with Silk Hope School students during the Reindeer Readers program. County Schools (CCS) and McIntyre’s Books are filling some of the gaps with brand-new books, encouraging students in the district to read during the holiday break.

CCS Superintendent Dr. Derrick D. Jordan was at Silk Hope School earlier this month when students in Amy Leonard’s class tore into gift-wrapped books. Keebe Fitch and Sarah Carr, both from McIntyre’s, were there for the 3rd Annual Reindeer Readers program.

Through Reindeer Readers, donated books are given at no charge to students in the district’s elementary schools. The books are theirs to keep. The goal is fostering a joy for reading.
