PITTSBORO — The Chatham County Board of Education on June 30, 2022, approved April Burko as principal of Jordan-Matthews High School.

Burko will be leaving Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools as principal of Culbreth Middle School to join Chatham County Schools at Jordan-Matthews. She has been an educator since 2011, starting her career as a Social Studies teacher at T. Wingate Andrews High School in Guilford County Schools. She has served in a variety of capacities throughout her career in education. Including being an instructional coach and assistant principal.

A graduate of Wilkes University, Burko went on to earn her master’s of education in curriculum and instruction from Cleveland State University and is currently pursuing her doctorate of education in educational leadership from High Point University.

“I am excited to serve the Jordan-Matthews High School community," Burko said. "I am looking forward to cultivating relationships with students, staff and families as we work together to build on the rich traditions of the community and ensure the success of every student who walks through our doors.”

Burko’s background makes her an excellent choice for Jordan-Matthews’ principalship, said Chatham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson. 

“Her talents and strengths will both complement and ensure continued movement forward in growth for students at Jordan-Matthews High School,” he said. “She is ready to embrace this community and prepare her students to ensure their future success.

Burko succeeds Donna Barger, who is retiring as principal.
