Clubs and Activities
Students at Horton can be a part of a variety of extracurricular activities. They include a variety of clubs and extended learning opportunities.
Games Club is open to all students! The club meets Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the media center. Students can join a Dungeons and Dragons campaign or play a variety of tabletop games. Please see Ms. Shortley for more details.The Young Author Competition is a creative fiction and nonfiction writing outlet for our students. Many students submit their written work—from short stories and graphic novels to poetry and novella-length stories—in the hopes of snagging one of Horton's four slots in the countywide competition. Winners from each school are honored at a ceremony in April. Please see Ms. Shortley for more details.Interested in books and competition? Join our Battle of the Books teams! Fifth- and sixth-graders will be a part of our elementary team, while seventh- and eighth-graders will compete on our middle school team. The teams meet monthly, with meetings becoming more frequent as the competition gets closer. The Google classroom code is 721doq. See Ms. Shortley for more information.Do you like photography, design, or writing? Join the yearbook's editorial staff! Students will be able to take pictures of the highlights of this school year, write short features, and design the book. The Google Classroom code is ceizyku. See Ms. Shortley for more information.Student Ambassadors are a voluntary program for fifth- through eighth-graders in which students have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership qualities. Student Ambassadors will help organize, plan, and carry out many school and community-wide projects. Students are committed to lead by example, demonstrate respect and responsibility, and engage in service. See Mrs. Johnson or Mrs. Kincaid for more information.In Finance 101, students will learn personal finance by opening and managing their own custodial banking and investment accounts. Club advisor Ms. Eaddy will bring in guest speakers from BB&T, NCSECU, investment bankers, and a host of professionals representing entrepreneurship, various careers, and local colleges. Meeting dates are Nov. 14, Dec. 5, Dec. 12, and Jan. 9 in Ms. Eaddy's room.
