Approximately 25% of the students who currently attend Chatham Middle School are classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) and receive services to help ensure success in the classroom. This program is known as English as a Second Language (ESL). The status of a student is determined by the responses on the Home Language Survey along with results of the annual English language proficiency test named ACCESS. Four teachers in the school are assigned to work with the ESL program. Services are provided in the following ways: in the classroom to work with students in small groups; as a content area teacher, such as a Social Studies teacher with ESL certification who integrates strategies; and by participation in the Dual Language Program. Teachers in the Dual Language Program are certified in their content area as well as ESL.
En la escuela Chatham Middle aproximadamente 25% de los estudiantes son clasificados como proficiencia limitada en inglés (LEP por sus siglas en inglés) y reciben servicios para tener éxito en todas las materias. El programa se conoce como “ESL”. Los estudiantes reciben este apoyo según las respuestas en la hoja de matriculación y los resultados del examen anual de destreza en inglés (conocido como ACCESS). Hay cuatro profesores en la escuela que se dedican al apoyo escolar de este grupo de estudiantes. Los profesores proveen servicios: en el aula al trabajar con grupos pequeños de estudiantes, como maestro de la materia (por ejemplo-una maestra de Estudios sociales que tenga certificacion en ESL) o en el programa bilingüe (Dual Language). Los maestros que trabajan en el programa bilingüe son licenciados en su materia y también para proveer los servicios de ESL.
