SCHOOL TRANSFORMATION RECOGNIZED AT NORTH CHATHAM ELEMENTARY
Chapel Hill, NC - North Chatham Elementary was recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s District and School Transformation Team for their ongoing continuous improvement efforts on Thursday, November 17. A team of Department of Public Instruction leaders and school leaders from the area visited the school to learn lessons they could take back to their schools. North Chatham Elementary is one of five outstanding schools to which visits will occur for the 2016-17 school year.
“I want our guests to see all the great work we’ve done at North Chatham and all the work we will continue to do as we celebrate how far we’ve come in terms of our focus on instruction, culture, and parent engagement” said Carla Murray, principal at North Chatham. “Our teachers deserve the credit for the hard work and commitment they’ve made to our continuous improvement efforts” reflected Murray.
Dr. James Ellerbe, Department of Public Instruction District Transformation Coach, noted that “North Chatham was chosen because the leader here is phenomenal. As I walk through the halls, I can see the culture of learning here at the school. The teachers are intentional about personalizing and differentiating learning for students. This is a diverse school and that is certainly celebrated by the administration and teachers.”
North Chatham, under Murray’s leadership, has decreased the number of students rated “Far Below Proficient” by 18%. Increases in Math for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 also increased alongside increases in reading proficiency in grade 3. School performance grades increased in every area last year compared to the prior year and throughout this transition the Teacher Working Conditions survey data demonstrated gains across the board in teacher satisfaction. The holistic approach to continuous improvement is ongoing and North Chatham Elementary teachers were recognized for their work on behalf of children.
