UNC student Chase Pickering related how he became interested in science at a very early age. A book he read by Jane Goodall, The Chimpanzee Family Book, inspired him to learn more about chimpanzees. After high school, he worked for one year in Tanzania at the Jane Goodall Institute.

As part of a lesson, a student dissected a carnivorous pitcher plant to discover its diet. Many FLIES were found!
